Rich in Lewis & Clark History

From beautiful Lake Sakakawea to the majestic badlands, the western North Dakota landscape is as inspiring as the people who live here.

This is the area where, in 1806, Captain Meriwether Lewis was shot during a hunting trip in the rugged Butte area near what is now Lund's Landing—the only gunshot injury of the entire Corps of Discovery Expedition.

Retrace the explorer's footsteps along our Lewis & Clark interpretive trail, browse artifacts at area museums, and sample regional cuisine. The colorful buttes, abundant juniper trees, and variety of wildlife make every visit an adventure.
