Lewis & Clark and the Corps of Discovery

The land surrounding Lund's Landing is steeped in the history of America's greatest exploration.

The area around Lake Sakakawea and Lund's Landing is rich with the history of the Lewis & Clark Expedition. In 1804–1806, the Corps of Discovery passed through this region during their epic journey to map the American West.

It was near this very area, in 1806 on the return trip, that Captain Meriwether Lewis was accidentally shot in the buttocks by one of his own men, Pierre Cruzatte, during a hunting excursion in the rugged butte country. This remains the only gunshot injury suffered during the entire Corps of Discovery Expedition.

The colorful buttes, abundant juniper trees, and sweeping vistas that Lewis and Clark marveled at over two hundred years ago remain largely unchanged. Visitors today can retrace the explorers' footsteps along interpretive trails, browse artifacts at area museums, and experience the same awe-inspiring landscape that captivated the Corps of Discovery.
